The WD_Black SN7100 is an NVMe SSD that, according to its manufacturer, Western Digital, improves performance by up to 35% compared to the previous generation. Below, we share the results of our tests to see if this improvement is really noticeable compared to other options on the market.

What difference does it make to have the WD_Black SN7100?

This drive is intended for laptops, desktops and mobile devices such as the ASUS ROG Ally X, providing good power efficiency and outstanding speeds. It is available in versions up to 4TB, although we evaluated the 1TB model.

Testing methodology

This time, we evaluated it on a computer with the following characteristics:

  • CPU: Intel Core i9-14900K
  • GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090
  • RAM: 32 GB Kingston Fury DDR5 at 5600 Mhz
  • Motherboard: Z790 AORUS Elite AX
  • Cooling system: Aorus Waterforce X240

With this configuration, we obtained a read speed of 7,104 MB/s and a write speed of 6,933 MB/s, which is just below what the manufacturer promises in its datasheet.

Design

This model does not have an integrated heatsink, so it is important to take this into account if you plan to install it on a motherboard that does not include it either.

Conclusion

The WD_Black SN7100 is a very competitive SSD for its price, energy efficiency and high speeds, making it an excellent choice for desktop assemblies with integrated heatsink, especially if you plan to install current games that require high performance. It is also compatible with laptops, the ASUS ROG Ally X and even a PS5.
