What are add-ons, the new official Minecraft mods from Mojang?

Mojang has just added Add-Ons to the Bedrock version of Minecraft, finally bringing curated mods to the game. Here’s everything we know about them so far.

Minecraft just got a long-awaited feature for the Bedrock Edition of the game in the form of Add-Ons, a new type of DLC now available on the Minecraft Marketplace that basically brings mods that can “change the way that things in the game look and behave” to the ever-expanding title.

According to the official Minecraft blog, add-ons are pieces of content that “let you add new blocks, mobs, items, recipes, and other content to both your existing worlds and new ones. Add-ons are your way to unlock new designs, adventures, and game mechanics. In other words – a literal game changer!”

What exactly are Add-ons in Minecraft?

Add-Ons are basically a curated list of mods approved by Mojang that work just as with the Java Edition, with which players continue to expand on the many different ways they choose to play Minecraft. These changes go from simple thing like visual appearances, skins, the look of certain monsters and more, to actually altering the game mechanics. Mods have always been a huge part of the Minecraft community, with some blooming into basically fully-fledged games inside Minecraft that eventually give way to more creativity and the development of more and more tools.

In the case of add-ons, maybe you won’t find everything you can get in the Java Edition, but it’s the first time something like this is available for the game on consoles. Installing them is also extremely simplified in comparison, with players only needing to download and select them straight from the Minecraft Marketplace. Mojang is even giving away a variety of add-ons for free, which opens the door to even more freebies being available down the line.

Can you create your own Add-Ons?

The add-ons system is still in its testing phase, even if they have now been made available, but Mojang has opened up the chance to create your own with them. There is no assurance that you’ll be able to sell your own Add-Ons on the Marketplace, but according to Mojang, Minecraft Creators are able to make Skins, Survival Spawns, entire Worlds, Texture Packs, Blocks, Items, Entities, and more.

They also have documentation on how to do this in the game’s official page, which you can find right here.

How to buy and use Add-Ons?

Buying Add-Ons on the Marketplace works exactly the same as any other piece of content available right now:

  • Find the content you would like to purchase on the store by exploring the various menus or using the search function.
  • Select how you want to pay for your purchase. You can use Minecoins already in your wallet or select the price tag that will purchase the required Minecoin pack and immediately use those coins.

If you’re only trying to get to content you’ve already purchased, and want to re-download it, this is how:

  • Sign into your Microsoft account on the Minecraft title screen
  • Enter Marketplace
  • On the left side, select My Content
  • Find the content you want to use and select Download on its product page
