PlayStation

Which PlayStation console is faster? Someone compared boot times for every gen, from PS5 to PSX

Loading times have always been one of the more important selling points in generational upgrades, but how fast do modern PlayStations boot up when compared with their predecessors?

The arrival of new generation consoles like PS5 has led to the disappearance (or at least reduction) of one of the elements that bother players the most: loading and processing times. But does it apply to boot times? How fast can you get into a game now from the moment you push the power button?

Youtuber eldanber set out to find out these answers and more in a video that has started to gain attention online, in which they put every PlayStation console to the test with various comparisons that go from their boot-up times to how their graphics have evolved. So just how long does it take for each PlayStation from the moment you press the Power button before it boots into a homescreen? This are the results (although, hardware and maintenance do affect these, so these are this particular results only).

  • PSX - 00:11:03
  • PS2 - 00:11:05
  • PS3 - 00:25:07
  • PS4 - 00:22:24
  • PS4 Pro - 00:20:24
  • PS5 - 00:20:00

Yes, although more than one person may be surprised, the console that takes the shortest time to be operational after pressing the button is PSX, the first PlayStation with just 11 seconds. Many of you will wonder how it is possible that PS5, the new generation machine with such a fast SSD, takes 20 seconds, although the explanation is simple: as the years go by and new systems come out, the their systems become more complex, with many more features having to be loaded in comparison to the older consoles. In other words: If PS5 had a hard drive like those of yesteryear, it would probably take more than a minute to boot up.

Ghost of Tsushima is coming to PC

Speaking of speed, Ghost of Tsushima is one of the games in which the PS5 SSD and the technical benefits of the console are most noticeable since it allows you to travel around the world almost immediately without having to wait for loading times. The game was just announced for PC and will arrive on Steam on May 16.
