Who are Eugene and Gail in The Last of Us, and why the second season of Max’s series introduces this important change
The first episode of the new season has raised doubts among fans, as the character’s past is not the one explained in the video game.

It’s only been a few hours since The Last of Us Season 2 premiered on Max, and we already have one big question on the table: who are Eugene and Gail? The former we know - quickly - from The Last of Us: Part 2, the second installment of Naughty Dog’s PlayStation video game saga, while the latter is a new addition to the series.
- NOTE: The following lines contain spoilers for the first episode of The Last of Us Season 2 in Max.
Gail, the new character in The Last of Us
Although the first episode of Season 2 of The Last of Us is very faithful to the video game, there is one unreleased element that has not gone unnoticed by fans: the inclusion of a blonde woman named Gail, who works as a psychologist in Jackson, the place where Joel, Ellie, and Tommy currently live. At one point in the episode, it is revealed that Joel is in therapy, as the remorse of lying to Ellie at the end of the first season - and the first game - is keeping him up at night.
In one of their conversations about guilt, hatred, and forgiveness, Gail reveals that Joel shot and killed her husband, Eugene Linden, something she should hate with all of her heart, but she comes to terms with and tries to live with in some sort of normalcy. This has not gone unnoticed by fans of the video game, as The Last of Us: Part 2 explains Eugene’s death in a very different way.
Okay, but who is Eugene?
Eugene was a member of the Fireflies and worked alongside Tommy, with whom he participated in several attacks in the Denver quarantine zone, resulting in the deaths of several soldiers. Years later, already in Jackson, Eugene was Dina’s mentor, teaching her how to repair electronic equipment. It’s funny, because in the second season of the series, Dina knows absolutely nothing about the subject and even asks Joel to show her his knowledge in this regard. As we said, in the series it is explained that she died at Joel’s hands, but in the game this is not the case, as Dina and Ellie mention that she died of a stroke when she was 73 years old.
