Who are the biggest winners and losers at the box office so far in the summer of 2024?
A successful summer for the cinema.
For the film industry, summer is one of the most important times of the year. Not because of the awards and recognition, but because of the money that can be made. Not all movies that come out at this time can be winners, and there are even some that come out earlier to avoid taking on the big heavyweights. We are at the peak of this summer’s releases, and big movies like Inside Out 2, Deadpool & Wolverine, Twisters, Bad Boys and many more have already been released. But which movies are winning and losing at the box office this year? Let’s take a look.
The highest-grossing films through the summer of 2024
First, let’s define what separates a movie as a winner from a loser. The first detail to win is that the movie must be able to exceed the cost of its production and earn twice what it cost. Even if some of these movies make more money than they cost, that is not enough.
On the other hand, we have to get the dates straight. Sometimes the summer of releases doesn’t follow the season, so even if we wanted to include the #2 movie at the box office right now (according to Box Office Mojo), Dune Part 2 was released in March, or talk about a flop like Madame Web, which was released in February. Usually the seasonality starts in May.
Movie | Worldwide Box Office | Production Cost | Winner or Loser |
---|---|---|---|
Inside Out 2 | $1,523,889,769 | $200 million | Winner |
Despicable Me 4 | $686,657,353 | $100 million | Winner |
Deadpool & Wolverine | $590,629,906 | $200 million | Winner |
Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes | $397,042,221 | $160 million | Winner |
Bad Boys: Ride or Die | $395,707,411 | $100 million | Winner |
A Quiet Place: Day One | $255,156,796 | $67 million | Winner |
Twisters | $235,142,165 | $155-200 million | Loser |
The Garfield Movie | $222,794,919 | $60 million | Winner |
IF | $186,715,020 | $110 million | Loser |
Bob Marley: One Love | $179,393,170 | $70 million | Winner |
The Fall Guy | $178,140,194 | $140 million | Loser |
Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga | $172,775,791 | $168 million | Loser |
As you can see from our chart, this has been a summer of great success. Although it remains to be seen how much some of the new releases will have to grow in the coming weeks.
