Who is Ezekiel Sims, the villanous Spider-Man of ‘Madame Web?
Let’s take a look at the mysterious figure that caught the fans’ attention during the ‘Madame Web’ trailer for his similarities to Spider-Man.
‘Madame Web’, the new Spiderverse movie from Sony Pictures in cooperation with Marvel Studios, presented its first trailer recently with the staging of new cinematographic incarnations of Spider-Man, such as Sydney Sweeney’s Spider Woman, or an evil dark Spider-Man, a figure that is a mystery to many superhero fans who do not know the mythology of Spider-Man so thoroughly. Therefore, we are going to review the history of Ezekiel Sims in Marvel Comics to discover a character who promises to give a lot to play with in the live-action Spiderverse.
Who is Ezekiel Sims in the Spider-Man comics?
Ezekiel Sims is a man of great economic power who obtained powers similar to those of Spider-Man through a ritual directly related to the so-called ‘totems’, people who acquire superpowers linked to certain animals, in this case, spiders. According to its own mythology, the spider that bit Peter Parker did not cause the young man’s spider superpowers, but rather the spider transferred these powers before dying from the experimental radiation to which it was subjected.
All this leads us to expand the nature of some of the most iconic villains of Spider-Man, based on different animals that feel the need to hunt down Peter Parker as one of these ‘totems’. In Ezekiel’s case, he himself tries to kill Spider-Man, although he ultimately finds redemption by realizing Parker’s true nature, who has sacrificed much of his life to save others, giving meaning to the famous motto “with great power comes great responsibility.”
In the comics, Ezekiel displays powers very similar to those of Spider-Man, such as super strength and superhuman agility, although he does not have web-launching devices. Nor does he wear a suit as such, but is shown as he is, although with a wild and disheveled appearance.
Regarding the representation of Ezekiel in ‘Madame Web’, we can see a look similar to that of the comics in his appearance on the New York subway, although the dark suit is similar to that of Spider-Man, and is an original creation for the film. ‘Madame Web’ opens in theaters next February 14, 2024.
