Will Pedro Pascal’s Reed Richards lead the Avengers? ‘Fantastic Four’ director walks back viral comment
Matt Shakman says the internet misinterpreted his words; leadership in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ is “for the Russo brothers to reveal”.

As 'The Fantastic Four: First Steps’ hits theaters, fans are buzzing about Pedro Pascal’s portrayal of Reed Richards, and whether he’s being positioned as the next leader of the Avengers. The speculation stems from a quote by director Matt Shakman, who described Richards as “the guy who’s leading the Avengers.” But now, Shakman is clarifying that his words were taken out of context.
What Shakman actually said
In a recent interview, Shakman explained that he was referring to Reed Richards’ comic book history, not the MCU’s future:
“Sometimes he’s leading the Avengers, sometimes he’s the scientist in the lab, sometimes he’s the family man. I needed someone who could do all of that, and Pedro can.”
He emphasized that any decisions about Richards’ role in 'Avengers: Doomsday’ are up to Joe and Anthony Russo, who are directing the film:
“Where Reed Richards goes in 'Avengers: Doomsday’ is for the Russo brothers to tell you.”
So, is Reed Richards leading the Avengers?
Not officially. While Pascal’s version of Mr. Fantastic will appear in 'Avengers: Doomsday’ (December 18, 2026), there’s no confirmation that he’ll lead the team. Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige has hinted that Sam Wilson’s Captain America may take on that role instead.
Still, Shakman’s casting of Pascal was intentional, he wanted someone who could evolve from cerebral scientist to action-ready hero, and potentially step into leadership if the story calls for it.
The MCU is entering a transitional phase. With 'Avengers: Doomsday’ replacing Kang with Doctor Doom as the central villain, and the Fantastic Four now integrated into the main timeline, fans are eager to know who will anchor the next generation of heroes.
Pascal’s Reed Richards may not be the leader yet, but the seeds are clearly being planted.
