‘X-Men 97′ Leaves Three Major Plot Arcs Ready After Its Spectacular Final Episode

‘X-Men 97′ is one of the most critically acclaimed Marvel productions in recent memory, and the final episode of its spectacular first season does not disappoint, especially with its many cameos. This Disney+ exclusive animated series leaves an open ending with three major storylines heading into the show’s second season. We take a look at where the new season, which has yet to have a premiere date, will begin.
Warning: For obvious reasons, this news item contains spoilers for ‘X-Men 97′, mainly for episode 10 of the first season, called Tolerance is Extinction - Part 3.
Will there be a second season of ‘X-Men 97′?
Not only will there be a second season of ‘X-Men 97′, but a third season has also been confirmed. Yes, there are no concrete premiere dates at the time of this news.
The series’ second season began development in July 2022, and the final episodes were completed a year later, in July 2023. It is also known that Beau DeMayo, creator of ‘X-Men 97′, was in the process of pitching ideas for a third season before he was fired by Marvel in March 2024.
What storylines will be featured in the second season of ‘X-Men 97′?
Although the X-Men manage to neutralize the threat posed by Bastion and his Prime Sentinels, Asteroid M, after being attacked by the U.S. government, spins out of control and threatens to hit the East Coast, decimating the Earth if it manages to collide causing a planetary extinction event similar to the meteorite that wiped out the dinosaurs.
Fortunately, Charles can rouse Magneto from his trance, and the powerful mutant reverses the asteroid’s collision course, pulling it out of Earth’s orbit. But both the asteroid and the X-Men who tried to avert disaster vanish into the stratosphere, leaving no trace.
Six months later, Forge is at the X-Men mansion trying to recruit new mutants for the team when he encounters the time-traveling Bishop, who gives him the key to what happened to the missing teammates: they were displaced in time by something or someone. The two set out to find them.
On the one hand, Rogue, Nightcrawler, Beast, Magneto, and Professor X are sent to Egypt in the year 3000 BC. Here they meet En Sabah Nur, the first mutant and the future villain Apocalypse.
On the other hand, Jean and Scott/Cyclops were sent to the distant future. Specifically, to the year 3960. Both are surrounded by seemingly hostile forces led by the mother Askani... who introduces them to a young Nathan, the son of Scott and Madelyne, who will grow up to be the powerful mutant Cable.
These three storylines serve as the basis for the second season of ‘X-Men 97′. Forge and Bishop must first find their missing teammates across the timeline and then bring them back to the present. Meanwhile, the time-displaced will have to deal with new problems from the era they are in, and their presence may alter important events in the series’ timeline. For example, will they succeed in preventing En Sabah Nur from becoming Apocalypse, or will their presence ironically set him on that path, leading to a self-fulfilling prophecy?
There are also unanswered questions, such as what happened to Storm, Morph, and Wolverine, since they were never seen in either the future or the past, or what happened to Jubilee and Sunspot in the six-month time jump; this may lead to additional storylines.
