Xbox sets a date for the arrival of the next generation of consoles
The Xbox Series X|S and the PlayStation 5 still have quite the life ahead of them, if Xbox’s prediction about this generation is to be believed.
The lawsuit between the FTC and Microsoft over the purchase of Activision Blizzard is bringing to light internal communications that speak openly about what’s to come in the industry. Recently we learned than the upcoming Machine Games Indiana Jones game would be exclusive to the Xbox ecosystem, now we know what date the next generation of consoles is aiming for.
According to the division’s forecasts, the”expected starting period” of the next generation is 2028, that is, the successor to Xbox Series X|S (leaving aside a hypothetical revision) will debut on the market at some point in that year. The date appears in documentation related to their commitment to continue publishing Call of Duty on PlayStation for the next 10 years.
This term would in any case go beyond the expected starting period of the next generation of consoles (in 2028). Thus, Call of Duty will be published on successor PlayStation consoles should one be released during the term of the agreement,” stated Microsoft. They also stressed this collaboration “would ensure that Call of Duty console games are offered on PlayStation at parity with Xbox.”
The forecasts are maintained from November 2022
This is not the first time that companies have talked about what is to come after PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. In November 2022, PlayStation pointed out that Microsoft had offered them access to Call of Duty until 2027, a range that for them was not enough since “by the time SIE launched the next generation of its PlayStation console” they would have already lost access to Activision franchises, including Call of Duty.
In fact, in the same line it was Microsoft itself who assured that they did not expect the launch of their next console to happen “until before the end of 2028 at the earliest”. It is clear that we still have a long way to go before we make the leap.
