Xbox’s master plan to turn your physical games into digital licenses: Is an Xbox Helix without a disc drive on the horizon?
Several leaks suggest that Microsoft has an ambitious plan to digitize players’ game libraries.
Last month, Sony announced that it would stop producing game discs starting in January 2028, which dealt a devastating blow to the physical format. Despite all the criticism it has received since then, the company has shown no intention of reversing its decision, and it remains unclear whether the future PS6 will be sold with a disc drive. For its part, Microsoft has not yet revealed many details about Xbox Helix, its upcoming console, although rumors suggest it could offer an interesting alternative for gamers.
Here’s how Xbox’s ‘Disc to Digital’ system would work
A few weeks ago, there were reports that Microsoft was developing a system called “Disc to Digital,” which would allow users to convert physical Xbox One and Xbox Series games into digital licenses linked to both the disc and the user’s account. Now, thanks to a series of alleged documents leaked by insiders, such as eXtas1s, more details about the system have come to light. The way it works would be very simple: when you insert a compatible disc into an Xbox with a disc drive, the system would grant a digital license. From then on, that game could be played on any device in the Xbox ecosystem, including future consoles without disc drives, PCs, and compatible portable devices—all without having to reinsert the disc.
However, it is important to note that the license would always remain tied to the disc itself. If we sell it or lend it to a friend, the next time it is used, the license would automatically transfer to the new owner, and the previous owner’s access would be revoked. Under no circumstances would multiple digital licenses be created.
Xbox 360 Games on PC?
On another note, leaks also suggest that Microsoft is working on a way to bring Xbox 360 games to PC using its own emulator, which would be integrated into the Xbox ecosystem. Thanks to this, developers wouldn’t need to adapt their games; they’d simply have to decide on matters such as whether to include them in Game Pass or set retail prices. This system is expected to roll out gradually between 2027 and 2028, while compatibility with original Xbox games is set to arrive in October of this year.
Finally, the documents mention that Microsoft had planned to test the rumored “Disc to Digital” program with Xbox Insider members last July. Evidently, it seems this never actually happened, so it’s implied that the company decided to delay both the beta and the official announcement of the service, which had initially been planned for this August.

Although all this information should be taken with a grain of salt until it’s officially confirmed, there are more and more signs pointing to the Xbox Helix being a 100% digital console, just like the PlayStation 6. Is there any hope for fans of physical media? We’ll just have to be patient until everything is clarified.
