Video game collectors are always on the lookout for swag of all kinds, but rarely do they come across an opportunity as sweet as one lucky buyer in Greece. While visiting a bookstore, he discovered a brand-new, sealed original Game Boy, a true treasure for any retro enthusiast. Although the price he paid for it was not disclosed, the console remained untouched for decades until his purchase in March 2025.

A treasure hidden in plain sight for decades, this sealed Game Boy sat in the window of a modest bookstore until it was purchased in 2025

In the world of retro collecting, it’s the unexpected finds that generate the most excitement. A Greek user named Kleonas Sephirotakis recently took to the Loot of the Day Facebook group to share his incredible discovery: an original, factory-sealed Game Boy that he said was sitting in the window of a small bookstore. Nintendo’s iconic console, released in 1989, had been sitting unnoticed for decades until it was finally purchased in March 2025. Although the purchase price has not been disclosed, on the collector’s market, a unit in this condition of this particular package can easily reach 8,000 euros, about $8,700. The reason for such an exorbitant price? Very simple: this is a very popular Nintendo console that was discontinued many years ago. In short, this user has found a great bargain.

The story of this find is a reminder that many small stores have kept out-of-print products for years, unaware of their current value. The Game Boy in question has survived the passage of time in its original box, with neither dust nor light affecting its condition, a rare occurrence for items more than three decades old. In addition, it is likely that the location of the display case protected the box from direct sunlight, avoiding the dreaded sunfade that yellows and discolors the outer packaging of games and consoles. These types of discoveries not only evoke nostalgia in those who grew up with these systems, but also rekindle interest in collecting and preserving video games, and encourage other members of the community to “go hunting” in the most inhospitable corners of their cities.

Even today, in the digital age, it is still possible to find relics in the most unexpected places: neighborhood stores, stationery shops, or small warehouses can hide real treasures without anyone knowing it, and sometimes new finds in back rooms have allowed discontinued products like this Game Boy to return to the market at surprising prices. For retro enthusiasts, the “ban” is still open, and with patience and a bit of luck, it is still possible to find mythical games and consoles in a state as if they had just left the factory, a kind of temporary capsule that has survived the vicissitudes of time.

Although the lucky owner of this factory-sealed Game Boy has not announced whether he will keep it, dare to open it for use, or intend to resell it, this unique discovery in Greece is a reminder that nostalgia remains a powerful driver in the world of collecting, giving products from such prestigious brands as Nintendo great monetary value.
