Zack Snyder reveals his original plans to make an R-rated Star Wars movie

The director of Man of Steel, Batman v Superman, Army of the Dead, and Netflix’s upcoming Rebel Moon has shared his impossible Star Wars vision.

Update:
Zack Snyder Star Wars

Since the beginning of the Rebel Moon Netflix project by Zack Snyder, the next film from the director of Man of Steel and Batman v Superman -among many others- was cataloged as “Zack Snyder’s Star Wars”, all this after the filmmaker revealed that he thought up the concept for Lucasfilm to direct his own Star Wars movie, something that ultimately did not happen. And from his ‘crazy’ ideas about his vision of Star Wars, Rebel Moon was born, a film destined to start a new science fiction universe on Netflix. Thanks to a recent interview with Empire, Snyder has revealed some of those ideas for his failed Star Wars.

Zack Snyder on Star Wars: “It was probably never going to be what I wanted”

In 2012, in full post-production of Man of Steel, the filmmaker who designed the beginnings of the now-extinct DCEU created his own idea of what Star Wars could become, a concept that years later he would apply to Rebel Moon, emphasizing the idea it being “Seven Samurai in space.” “I knew that the origins for George were a lot of those Kurosawa films.”

Still, Snyder acknowledges that his vision for Star Wars was unlikely to happen: “The sale [of Lucasfilm to Disney] had just happened,” says Snyder. “There was that window where, you know, who knows what’s possible? I was like, ‘I don’t want any of your characters. I don’t want to do anything with any known characters, I just want to do my own thing on the side.’ And originally I was like, ‘It should be rated R!’ That was almost a non-starter. I knew it was a big ask, to be honest,” he says of making the film within the Star Wars galaxy. “But the deeper I got into it, I realised it was probably never going to be what I wanted.”

From all of this, the concept and ideas would evolve until it became Rebel Moon, which we will be able to see on December 2023 on Netflix, with a second installment on the way still without a release date.
