Pokémon Legends Arceus: Which starter Pokémon to choose? Cyndaquil, Rowlet or Oshawott

You can only choose one and you have to think long term, which combination of types do you prefer? We tell you all about the initials of the Hisui region.

Pokémon Legends Arceus: Which starter Pokémon to choose? Cyndaquil, Rowlet or Oshawott

The Hisui region, the former Sinnoh region, is the setting for Pokémon Legends Arceus. Game Freak's long-awaited game is now available exclusively on Nintendo Switch, which means hundreds of thousands of players are now setting foot on the vast lands of this island for the first time, and at the same time having to decide which starter Pokémon to choose - Cyndaquil, Rowlet or Oshawott, that's the question. We'll give you a hand.

Cyndaquil, Rowlet and Oshawott, which one suits you?

The first thing we have to make clear is that you can't answer the question: which starter Pokémon is "better", because they are really three very balanced creatures, with similar powers and a similar potential. However, there are differences between them that may be more suited to your play style or preferences - which is what really matters. Our advice is clear: look for the final evolutionary form, which is the one you'll spend the most time with in Pokémon Legends Arceus.

  • Cyndaquil (Generation II) — Fire Type. Evolves into Quilava and Thyplosion
  • Oshawott (Generation V) — Water Type. Evolves to Dewott and Samurott
  • Rowlet (Generation VII) — Grass Type. Evolves to Dartrix and Decidueye.

The key is in what combinations of types and base stats have their final evolutions, which are truly useful for the rest of the adventure. To help you choose the best possible (remember, there is not one necessarily better than the other), we leave you their characteristics and our point of view for each of them.

Cyndaquil: advantages and disadvantages

A classic. The Fire-type starter from the Johto region stands out for its Speed and Special Attack. Therefore, try that -especially- if it has a good nature favorable for Special Attack (Modest), it learns special moves. Similarly, Thyphlosion is very powerful in special attacks and very fast, but unlike Johto's Thyphlosion, in Hisui it is a Fire and Ghost-type. What does it mean? Roughly speaking, the Ghost-type allows it to have a very good move coverage against many elemental types in a neutral way; that is to say, it is a balanced Pokémon.

  • Thyphlosion is weak to Ground, Rock, Ghost, Water and Dark moves, but powerful against Bug, Ghost, Steel, Ice, Ice, Psychic and Grass with this combination.
  • Without going into spoilers, if you choose Cyndaquil you will have a disadvantage against three of the five Noble Pokémon. You will have an advantage against two of them.

Oshawott: advantages and disadvantages

Oshawott

Oshawott, the Water-type starter from Unova, is perhaps one of the least popular, but the new regional form of Samurott -its final evolution- is one of the most attractive for several reasons. Oshawott is a very neutral Pokémon, without a feature that particularly stands out; although it is a special offensive (Special Attack). Make sure, however, that it learns special moves rather than physical ones.

  • Its final evolution is Samurott, and in Hisui it is Water and Dark. What does this mean in terms of weaknesses and strengths? Offensively, you will do super-effective moves against Ground, Rock, Ghost, Fire and Psychic; but beware: you will be weak against Fighting, Bug, Plant, Electric and Fairy. In the first half of the game, you'll have a particularly hard time with Oshawott.
  • If you choose Oshawott you will have a disadvantage against two of the five Noble Pokémon in the adventure and an advantage against three of them.

Rowlet: advantages and disadvantages

Rowlet

Rowlet, the Grass-type starter from Alola, is back with new features in its final evolutionary form. Of all the Pokémon Legends Arceus starters, Rowlet is the most recommended for newcomers because it has the most health points of all, being its great asset. However, it is also the least powerful offensively; in fact, in both Physical Attack and Special Attack it is almost equally powerful.

  • Its final evolution is Decidueye, one of the most popular. If in Alola it was Plant / Ghost, this time Decidueye has a really interesting combination of types: Plant / Fighting. The reason? Offensively, we can super-effectively hurt Pokémon of Normal, Ground, Rock, Ice, Steel, Water, and Dark types. On the other hand, we will be especially weak against Poison, Fire, Psychic, Ice, and Fairy. It will be especially difficult for Decidueye to visit the volcano and the tundra.
  • If you choose Rowlet you will have a disadvantage against two of the five Lord Pokémon in the adventure and an advantage against one of them. Two will be neutral. Rowlet will have the worst time against Hisui's Noble Pokémon.
