Super Mario movie delayed until 2023 but confirms new release date
Shigeru Miyamoto himself communicates on Nintendo's social media the decision to delay the movie and assures that "it will be well worth the wait."
Super Mario’s return to the big screen with his animated film GCI will unfortunately no longer take place in the last months of 2022, as Nintendo had previously announced. Through a brief message on social media, Shigeru Miyamoto himself has announced the decision to delay the production until 2023.
"This is Miyamoto," he began. "After consulting with Chris-san, my partner at Illumination on the Super Mario Bros. film, we decided to move the global release to Spring 2023–April 28 in Japan and April 7 in North America. My deepest apologies but I promise it will be well worth the wait."
For now, dates for other regions in the world have yet to be defined, although, considering the content of the tweet, Miyamoto-san has referred to a "worldwide launch", which invites us to think that the release will also take place in spring 2023.
A very collaborative effort
Chris Meledandri, CEO of Illumination, shared a similar statement though Illumination’s social media: “Miyamoto-san and I have been collaborating on all aspects of the Super Mario Bros. film and, together with our partners at Universal, have decided to move the global release to Sping 2023 - April 7 in North America and April 28 in Japan.” The producer also noted that they are "excited " to be able to share "this incredible film."
Chris Pratt (Guardians of the Galaxy) will voice Super Mario in the film. He will be joined by a cast that includes Anya Taylor-Joy (Peach), Charlie Day (Luigi), Jack Black (Bowser), Key (Toad), Rogen (Donkey Kong), Kevin Michael Richardson, Fred Armisen (Cranky Kong) and Sebastian Maniscalo (Spike). Charles Martinet, the voice of Mario and other Mushroom Kingdom characters in the video games, will also be present with several cameos.
A few months ago, Actor Charlie Day was interviewed about the upcoming Super Mario movie, although he's not fully aware of what's going on with the movie.
