Electronic Arts announced through a press release its partnership with Middle-earth Enterprises, a division of The Saul Zaentz Company. From this partnership will be born a new free-to-play video game for mobile devices, The Lord of the Rings: Heroes of Middle-earth, a role-playing game based on the fantasy and adventures of J.R.R. Tolkien's books: The Lord of the Rings.

Fans as well as new audiences will be able to immerse themselves in this new strategic competitive-social experience. This installment will be the newest IP in EA's portfolio of mobile games.

The Lord of the Rings: Heroes of Middle-earth will feature an immersive story, turn-based combat, a deep collectibles system and an extensive roster of characters from the vast universe of The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit. In it, players will fight through iconic stories from Tolkien's world, taking on the fight against the great evils of Middle-earth.

"We are incredibly excited to partner with The Saul Zaentz Company and Middle-earth Enterprises on the next generation of mobile role-playing games," said Malachi Boyle, Vice President of Mobile RPGs at Electronic Arts, "The team is filled with fans of The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit and each day they bring their tremendous passion and talents together to deliver an authentic experience for players. The combination of high-fidelity graphics, cinematic animations, and stylized art immerses players in the fantasy of Middle-earth where they’ll go head-to-head with their favorite characters."

"We are thrilled to be working with EA once again, this time to bring a mobile game solely inspired by Middle-earth as described in the literary works of J.R.R. Tolkien to its fans," said Fredrica Drotos, director of branding and licensing for SZC's Middle-earth Enterprises. "It’s an honor to work with the talented Capital Games team whose knowledge and love of the lore is palpable throughout."

Recall that Electronic Arts already has a history with the Tolkien universe thanks to the titles it has previously released for both PC and consoles, especially those that adapted the films directed by Peter Jackson 20 years ago.

The Lord of the Rings: Heroes of Middle-earth is expected to have limited regional beta testing this summer.
