PS5 price increase in selected markets, U.S. remains unchanged

We already have the news of the day, of the week and possibly of the year: Sony has officially confirmed the price increase of PS5, both the model with the disc reader and digital. Through the Official PlayStation Blog, the Japanese company has shared the new prices and attributes the increase to the global economic situation, cost overruns, and the current inflation rate. We tell you how much it costs from now on in Europe, Latin America and other regions.

"The global economic environment is a challenge that many of you around the world are no doubt experiencing. We’re seeing high global inflation rates, as well as adverse currency trends, impacting consumers and creating pressure on many industries. Based on these challenging economic conditions, SIE has made the difficult decision to increase the recommended retail price (RRP) of PlayStation 5 in select markets across Europe, Middle East, and Africa (EMEA), Asia-Pacific (APAC), Latin America (LATAM), as well as Canada," Sony explained. The price will not increase in the United States.

When will the PS5 cost after the price hike?

Here are the new PS5 prices with reader and digital in all territories that have undergone the aforementioned increase.

  • PS5 with Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive – €549.99

Besides justifying the price increase as "a necessity given the current global economic environment and its impact on SIE’s business", the company has ratified its intention to continue working to solve the stock problems.

Meta Quest 2: virtual reality also goes up in price

Sony is not the first company to increase the price of its products due to the inflation rate that directly impacts production costs. Last July, Meta (Facebook) announced the price increase of its virtual reality device, Meta Quest 2. The company assured that it has invested millions of dollars in this technology and that after reviewing the prices, they took this decision as a measure to "be able to continue investing in the future."
