Elden Ring has opened the Colosseum gates: how does the DLC work?

The Game Awards 2022 ended with the most awaited moment by many: Elden Ring winning GOTY 2022, received by none other than Hidetaka Miyazaki. But with the party’s hangover clearing up, we think it’s about time we play again given that a few days ago we got a surprise DLC that activated the Colosseums in The Lands Between. It’s a new way to battle between players, although there are a few things you should keep in mind before jumping into the arena.

How to access the Elden Ring DLC

If you’ve launched the game recently, you might have noticed there’s a 1 GB update available. This is the DLC that opens the Colosseums, completely free and available for every version of the game. Unlike other expansions of the franchise, you don’t need to do anything special to be able to enjoy its contents. You only need to travel to any of the arenas (either Caelid’s, Limgrave’s, or Leyndell’s) to make sure you can open its gates.

Inside there’s not much to see, apart from a statue to interact with that pops up a simple menu telling you the rules of the new PvP mode. If you don’t want to travel too much, you can even go to the Colosseums from the Roundtable Hold.

Elden Ring PvP in Colosseums: how does it work?

This is a fast and simple competitive mode. You choose your type of combat, jump into the arena to fight other players, and the last Tarnished standing is the winner, simple as that. However, there are a few rules you should know before jumping in.

  • Combat Ordeal - Free-for-all mode with respawns where the person with the most kills at the end of a timer wins.
  • United Combat - Team-based mode where the team with the most kills at the end of a timer wins.
  • Duel - 1v1 duel with no respawns.
  • Leyndell - All three modes are available in this specific Colosseum, but you’re allowed to summon Spirit Ashes (like the Mimic Tear and Black Knife Tiche) during combat.
