Update:
Episode 3 of The Last of Us: director confirms THAT Easter Egg related to the game

In just 2 episodes, The Last of Us has given us a lot of nods, references, and hidden details for fans of the original video game. Episode 3, Long, Long Time, did not want to be left behind and has some little details that are worth looking at.

Prior to the broadcast of this episode, Meristation had the opportunity to speak with BAFTA-winning British director Peter Hoar to learn more about the production.

Warning, the following article contains mild spoilers for Long, Long Time, so we recommend that you watch it before reading on.

During our conversation, we talked about easter eggs and how the episodes we've seen have had these little nods to the game. With an episode like this one, where there is a bigger twist to what we experienced in the video game, we wanted to know what things we might have missed. Although it was too early to give us all the details, Peter did share 3 details with us:

  1. “The truck that they take for the rest of their journey, or at least potentially for the rest of their journey from Bill, which is what you get in the game, that’s not the exact replica. We did find a truck... The wrong type of truck but we did the livery right and we painted it with the right colors.”
  2. “There are more few T-Shirts and shirts and things to watch out for.”
  3. “I put a post-it note on the wall as Ellie walks through the back of this shop and it's a direct copy of the game. You can't tell it’s there but is just there. You know how you collect things in the game, there’s a little note which is an indication of how the game plays. Nobody saw that. And secretly, there’s a message for my husband in there, as well, but that's one for me.”

A connection to the game

In the final scenes of the episode, we see an image that will be very familiar to those of us who have played Naughty Dog's title. We have a view of a window with some rays of light coming in as we see the horizon in the distance. It just looked like it was missing some floating letters to start the game. Peter confirms that this is a reference to the game's splash screen and that there were more plans for it.

“There was a point where Craig decided that every episode needed to have that motif. He said, ‘it’s gonna start like wherever we are’ and I think he said something along the lines that there would like a select if you would wach it on HBO MAX, you could click on that image like you do in the game and you would go into the episode,” Hoar said. “But we though our story was so different that it didn’t feel right that it would be in the beginning. And so we were, ‘can we pitch this to you?’ and he loved it.”
