When does the 2024 MLB Draft start?
Mark your calendars for Sunday, July 14, when the 2024 MLB Draft kicks off. It’s a two-day event wrapping up on Tuesday, July 16. The excitement begins with the first round at 5 PM ET on Sunday, July 14. The action continues at 12 PM ET on both Monday (rounds 3-10) and Tuesday (rounds 11-20).

Where’s it happening?
This year’s Draft is set at the Cowtown Coliseum in Fort Worth, Texas. Since 2021, the Draft has been held in the same area as the MLB All-Star Game, which in 2024 is at the Texas Rangers’ Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas. Before that, the Draft took place at MLB Network studios in Secaucus, New Jersey.
How is the Draft order decided?
The Draft order is determined by a combination of a lottery system and the previous year’s regular season records. The first six picks are decided by a lottery involving all 18 non-playoff teams from the previous season, with the teams having the worst records getting better odds. In 2024, the Cleveland Guardians snagged the top pick despite only having a 2% chance. Picks beyond the top six are based on the teams’ regular season records.
