Major League Baseball rolled out a new system to decide the 2025 All-Star Game, and the National League made the most of it, clinching a win at Truist Park. After nine innings ended in a 6–6 tie, the NL took the tiebreaker 4–3 thanks to three home runs from Kyle Schwarber.

The National League wasted no time getting on the board. Paul Skenes held the AL scoreless in the first, striking out Gleyber Torres and Riley Greene. Then, Shohei Ohtani and Ronald Acuña Jr. hit back-to-back singles off Tarik Skubal, and Ketel Marte drove them both in with a double that hugged the right-field foul line.

Pitchers dominated through the next few innings. In the fourth, the American League stranded runners on the corners when Ryan O’Hearn grounded softly to pitcher David Paterson, who tossed to first to end the frame.

The NL lineup exploded in the sixth. Pete Alonso hit a three-run homer to right field, and Corbin Carroll followed up with a solo shot to center – becoming the first Arizona Diamondbacks player ever to homer in the Midsummer Classic.

Mexican power sparks AL comeback

The American League responded in the top of the seventh, and it was the Mexican-born players who led the charge. Alejandro Kirk singled, and Cuban pitcher Adrián Morejon walked Jonathan Aranda out of caution. With both Mexican players on base, Brent Rooker came in as a pinch hitter and crushed a three-run homer, cutting the deficit to 6–3. The AL added another on a Bobby Witt Jr. sacrifice grounder after Maikel García stole second.

MLB also paid tribute to Hank Aaron during the All-Star Game, honoring the night in 1974 when he hit his 715th home run – surpassing Babe Ruth – at the old Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium.

The NL had a chance to widen the gap in the bottom of the eighth but left two runners stranded. Elly De La Cruz and Kyle Stowers couldn’t capitalize with James Wood and Carroll on base.

Ranger Suárez took the mound to close things out for the NL, but Witt Jr. drove in a fifth run for the AL with a sharp line drive to right. Mets closer Edwin Díaz came in to finish the job but gave up the game-tying hit to Steven Kwan, evening the score at six.

Home runs break the deadlock

For the first time in All-Star Game history, the tie was settled by a home run derby-style showdown. Each team picked three hitters who took turns with three swings apiece to hit as many long balls as possible.

Brent Rooker hit two for the AL, Randy Arozarena added one, and Jonathan Aranda came up empty. On the NL side, Kyle Stowers hit one before Schwarber stepped up and went three-for-three with homers, giving the National League the edge and the 2025 All-Star Game victory.
