With the announcement on Wednesday that Adolis García of the Texas Rangers will compete in the 2023 MLB Home Run Derby, the field is now set. Earlier in the day, the Chicago White Sox’s Luis Robert Jr announced his participation as well, giving us the required eight sluggers.

With this announcement the first round looks like this:

  • Luis Robert (1) vs. Adley Rutschman (8)
  • Pete Alonso (2) vs. Julio Rodríguez (7)
  • Mookie Betts (3) vs. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. (6)
  • Adolis García (4) vs. Randy Arozarena (5)

The seeding is determined by the regular season home runs hit with each player being matched accordingly. Luis Robert enters as the top seed with 25 home runs this season, while the Rangers’ El Bombi sits at the middle of the seeding with 22 long balls so far.

The lowest seeded player is Adley Rutschman with 11 homers, followed by Julio Rodriguez with 13 shots. Vlad Guerrero also has 13 but gets the higher seeding based on his batting average.

On the other side of the coin is Pete Alonso, whose 25 home runs equal Robert Jr’s, but whose average is slightly lower at .217 vs .276. Mookie Betts has one more homer than García with 23 giving him the third seed.
