Anthony Santander leaves New York Yankees amid Toronto interest
MLB offseason negotiations are still underway, with several notable players available in free agency.
Offseason negotiations continue in MLB with several notable players available and looking for new destinations while teams reinforce for the new campaign.
The Bronx Bombers have already strengthened their roster with a first class pitcher in Max Fried, who joins on an eight-season deal in exchange for $218 million, from the Atlanta Braves.
In addition to confirming the arrival of former MVP Cody Bellinger from the Chicago Cubs, they also reached an agreement for the experienced Paul Goldschmidt who joins on a one-year deal valued at $12.5 million.
Yankees looking for Soto replacement
The New York Yankees are still looking for a outfielder to cover the loss of Juan Soto, who after finishing his agreement with the team, signed a huge $765 million contract for 15 seasons with the New York Mets.
In early December, according to insiders Jon Morosi (MLB Network) and Kerry Miller (Bleacher Report), the Yankees were interested in Anthony Santander, in a 5-year deal for $100 million to make him their starting right fielder.
“It would be a pretty big drop in the team’s on-base percentage if you compare Juan Soto (.419) to Anthony Santander’s career mark (.307), but he’s a switch-hitting right fielder who hit 44 home runs last season,” Miller says.
“He’s also done real damage at Yankee Stadium, with three home runs there in 2024. And had he played exclusively at Yankee Stadium over the past three seasons, Baseball Savant suggests he would have hit 113 home runs instead of 105,” Kerry Miller added.
Jon Heyman (NY Post) also noted that the player’s entourage and the management of the ‘Manhattan Mules’ had an initial meeting to learn about the player’s situation. Santander, who is currently a free agent, plays in right field and first base.
Where is Anthony Santander headed?
In the last few hours, a new destination for the Venezuelan player has emerged. The Toronto Blue Jays are reported to be ready to offer the player a 4-year contract for $82 million. Another option that appears on the radar is the Detroit Tigers.
Anthony Santander hit .235/.308/.506 with 44 home runs and 102 RBIs last season with the Baltimore Orioles.
