Anthony Volpe makes Gold Glove history for Yankees
The rookie went into the record books for the New York Yankees as the shortstop picked up the MLB award.
Anthony Volpe, rookie shortstop for the New York Yankees, was awarded the 2023 Gold Glove and became the first rookie in franchise history to do so.
The numbers behind Volpe’s Gold Glove
The Bronx Bombers player featured in 159 games during his rookie season and finished with a .970 fielding percentage and had 357 assists (with just 17 errors). As if that were not enough, he helped turn 63 double plays and saved 15 defensive runs.
Volpe beat men like Corey Seager of the Texas Rangers and Carlos Correa of the Minnesota Twins who aspired to achieve him in the same position. Correa had already won the Gold Glove in 2021 with the Houston Astros, Seager has not achieved it, but this season he was fundamental in obtaining the title in the World Series with the Texas Rangers and won the MVP award.
Volpe, in addition to being the first rookie in Yankees history to win the Gold Glove, is also the youngest shortstop to win it and the second of the position to obtain it with the Yankees, joining Derek Jeter.
What is the Gold Glove in MLB?
The Rawlings Gold Glove Award, to give it its full name, is an annual honour presented by Major League Baseball to the best defensive players at each position in both the American League and the National League. A panel of managers and coaches from each team votes to determine the winners, and they are not allowed to vote for players from their own team. The award is based on a combination of statistical analysis and the subjective evaluation of the voters.
The award is highly prestigious and is considered a significant recognition of a player’s defensive abilities. It has been awarded annually since 1957 and celebrates players for their exceptional fielding and their contributions to their team’s success.
