Astros era over: Alex Bregman’s next move to shake up MLB

One of the most anticipated moves of Major League Baseball’s offseason ahead of the 2025 campaign has finally been resolved. According to multiple reports, the Boston Red Sox have reached an agreement with infielder Alex Bregman, securing the 30-year-old as their newest acquisition.

As first reported by Chandler Rome of The Athletic, Bregman and the Red Sox have agreed to a three-year, $120 million contract. Additionally, MLB insider Mark Feinsand notes that the deal includes two opt-out clauses: the first at the end of the 2025 season, with another option available following the 2026 campaign.

This move significantly boosts Boston’s aspirations in the AL East, where they’ll aim to challenge the New York Yankees, Baltimore Orioles, Tampa Bay Rays, and Toronto Blue Jays. With Bregman’s departure from the Houston Astros, his tenure with the club that drafted him in 2015 officially comes to an end as he embarks on a new chapter in Massachusetts.

In Boston’s projected lineup, Bregman is expected to hit third and slot in at second base, given Rafael Devers’ firm hold on third base. Under manager Alex Cora, the Red Sox lineup is shaping up as follows: Jarren Duran (LF), Rafael Devers (3B), Alex Bregman (2B), Triston Casas (1B), Trevor Story (SS), Masataka Yoshida (DH), Wilyer Abreu (RF), Connor Wong (C), and Ceddanne Rafaela (CF).
