Devin Williams is leaving the New York Yankees for a three-year, 51 million dollar guaranteed deal with the New York Mets. The move was finalized Monday, according to MLB reports.

A rocky start in the Bronx

Williams struggled in his first months with the Yankees last season. By July, he had lost the closer role after posting a 5.01 ERA over his first 41 and one third innings. He turned things around late in the year with a 2.50 ERA, a 0.36 FIP and 34 strikeouts in just 18 innings.

From Milwaukee star to New York swing piece

Before landing in the Bronx, Williams spent his first six big league seasons with the Milwaukee Brewers, where he cemented himself as one of the league’s elite closers. He earned two All-Star selections and was named National League Rookie of the Year.

A key addition for the Mets

For now, Williams slots in as the missing piece in the Mets bullpen after Edwin Diaz hit free agency. The team remains interested in bringing Diaz back, although that will depend on how the market develops.

This is the Mets’ second major addition of the offseason. They also acquired second baseman Marcus Semien in a trade that sent outfielder Brandon Nimmo to the Texas Rangers.
