Ohtani went hitless – and still made Dodgers history again

The Los Angeles Dodgers beat the New York Mets again, this time 2-1 in the second game of the series at Dodger Stadium.

In a game defined by a pitching duel, Japan’s Yoshinobu Yamamoto and rookie Nolan McLean both worked deep into the night. Yamamoto allowed one run and four hits while throwing 104 pitches over 7 2/3 innings. He also struck out seven and issued one walk. He was replaced by Alex Vesia, who struck out all three batters he faced in the ninth inning to earn his second save.

McLean, meanwhile, gave up one run and two hits across seven innings, finishing with eight strikeouts and two walks.

Francisco Lindor got the Mets on the board early with a leadoff home run in the top of the first inning to make it 1-0. But the Dodgers answered quickly, as Kyle Tucker came around to score after Freddie Freeman hit a grounder that resulted in an out, tying the game at 1-1.

The California club pushed across the winning run in the eighth. Tucker lined a single into left field, driving in Miguel Rojas for the decisive 2-1 score.

Shohei Ohtani extended his on-base streak to 48 consecutive games after drawing an intentional walk from Brooks Raley in the eighth, although he finished the game 0 for 3.

In the third game of the series, Clay Holmes (2-1, 1.50 ERA) is set to start for the Mets, while Shohei Ohtani (1-0, 0.00 ERA) is expected to start for Los Angeles on Jackie Robinson Day.
