Chinese Taipei take on Japan in the final game of the 2024 WBSC Premier12 Super Round on Saturday (November 23) in a contest which will help decide which teams progress to the Championship final.
What’s at stake in Chinese Taipei vs Japan?
Japan, who are without MLB star Shohei Ohtani, go into the clash at Tokyo Dome knowing that a third successive win the Super Round will definitely see them through. The hosts thrashed the USA 9-1 in their first match of the round, before a narrower 9-6 victory against Venezuela.
Should Japan lose, they will still qualify provided the United States defeat Venezuela in Saturday’s early game. A defeat to Chinese Taipei and a win for the Venezuelans would see three countries tied on two victories. The tiebreaker used to determine the top two would be the head to head Team’s Quality Balance (runs scored / innings played at bat) – (runs allowed / innings playing on defence).
Chinese Taipei will definitely reach the Championship final if they win and the USA beat Venezuela. A loss and a win for the South Americans, however, would send them to the Bronze medal game. The Taiwanese team lost 2-0 to Venezuela but also recorded a big win over the United States to keep themselves alive in the tournament.
The USA, Venezuela and Chinese Taipei could all finish the group tied on one win, in which case the Team’s Quality Balance tiebreaker will also be applied.
