Dominican Republic vs Nicaragua: The lay of the land
The Dominican Republic and baseball are synonymous
Having won the WBC in 2013, the Dominicans are no lightweights in the game of baseball. On the other hand, that title is the only thing they have to show thus far, as the team have never really lived up to expectations since. Their 1-5 opening loss to Venezuela only serves to cement the point. To be clear, the DR finished fourth in 2006, didn’t make it out of the group in 2009 after a monumental upset at the hands of the Netherlands and last time around, succumbed to the defending champion U.S.A. in the second round after an unreal catch by Adam Jones. With a star-studded roster that includes the likes of Juan Soto, Julio Rodriguez, Eloy Jimenez and Teoscar Hernandez to name a few, expect big things from the DR.
Nicaragua’s first time to the dance
Having clinched the 20th and final spot in the WBC courtesy of a win over Brazil last year, Nicaragua is finally among the big boys. The problem is that it’s been a baptism of fire as the 1-9 loss to Puerto Rico clearly shows. On the flip side, this is a team that is largely made up of local talent, with Reds infielder Alex Blandino and outfielder Isaac Benard being the only US-born players on the roster. While it’s true that the team isn’t heavyweight in the game, they are some decent players in the lineup including former Royals third baseman Cheslor Cuthbert who is by far the best batter in the team. There is also the switch-hitting 21-year-old third baseman, Milkar Perez, who is a top 20 prospect in the Mariners system.
