The Chicago White Sox (3-3) earned their third win of the 2023 Major League Baseball season by beating the San Francisco Giants (2-3) 7-3 at Guaranteed Rate Field and Elvis Andrus made history.

Andrus recorded his two thousandth career MLB hit when he singled to right field in the fifth inning. With this stroke, the man from Maracay, Venezuela broke a 14 at-bat slump.

In reaching first safely, the veteran infielder joined his fellow countryman Miguel Cabrera (3,090), American Joey Votto (2,093) and Dominican Nelson Cruz (2,018) as the only active MLB players with at least two thousand hits in the Major Leagues.

The ball was gifted by Andrus to his mother, Elvia. Speaking to MLB.com, Elvis confirmed that she is the reason why he is in the Major Leagues. Andrus has already given Elvia the balls that he hit for his 500th, 1000th, and 1500th base hits.

“She’s the reason I’m here. She wrote to me, she said, ‘You better give me the ball,’” Andrus said. “I sent her a photo and told her that it is in a box and that she will have it soon. I was very excited, they sent me a video.”

Andrus now becomes the ninth Venezuelan player to reach the landmark. Cabrera (3,090), Omar Vizquel (2,877), Luis Aparicio (2,677), Bobby Abreu (2,470), Andrés Galarraga (2,333), Dave Concepción (2,326), Magglio Ordóñez (2,156) and Víctor Martínez (2,153) are all ahead of him in the record books.
