The New York Yankees have been rocked by the news that one of their star players faces a spell on the sidelines. Giancarlo Stanton has been placed on the 10-day injury list after suffered a strain to his left hamstring, the franchise reported through its social media sites.

Losing the 34-year-old at this stage of the season is a significant blow for the Yankees, who top the AL East standings with a 52-28 record (.650).

Giancarlo Stanton pulls up rounding third base

Stanton limped out of Saturday’s 3-8 win against the Atlanta Braves. He was seen wincing as he was rounding third base on an RBI double from Gleyber Torres. After undergoing tests, it is estimated that the player will be out for at least four weeks. He revealed that he was given a Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) injection on Sunday.

While Stanton himself is hopeful that he might be back in action before the return date that medical staff have given him, hamstring injuries take a long time to fully heal and the player’s injury history doesn’t exactly inspire optimism. He has missed 266 games during the last five seasons with various fitness issues including a ruptured ACL, ankle, hamstring and thigh injuries and tendinitis to his left Achilles.

“My feelings don’t really matter right now, it will be about four weeks and I have to do what I can to be back,” the five-time All-Star said.

Before his latest injury, Stanton had been hitting .246/.302/.492 during the current regular season with 18 home runs and 45 RBIs in 69 appearances for the Bronx Bombers.
