Real Madrid host Manchester City in a heavyweight Champions League clash this midweek, as the two European giants meet in the tournament’s knockout rounds for the fifth season in succession.
With Atalanta or Bayern Munich awaiting in the last eight, Madrid and City are to do battle in this year’s round of 16 - starting with the first leg in Spain.

What happened the last time the teams met in the UCL?
Not only are Madrid and City meeting yet again in the knockout stages, but the teams also crossed paths in the league phase earlier this season. In December, goals by Erling Haaland and Nico O’Reilly gave the Premier League club a 2-1 win in Madrid.
In the teams’ most recent Champions League knockout clash, in the 2024/25 playoffs, Madrid triumphed 6-3 on aggregate - largely thanks to Kylian Mbappé, who plundered four goals across the two legs.
However, Los Blancos will be without their star striker for Wednesday’s first leg - at the very least. This season’s Champions League top scorer, with 13 goals, Mbappé has been sidelined by a persistent knee issue.
