The New York Yankees’ free fall continues, and nothing seems capable of stopping it. This weekend, they were swept by the Miami Marlins at LoanDepot Park, and the Boston Red Sox have now overtaken them in the American League East standings for the 2025 Major League Baseball season.

Luis Gil’s long-anticipated return turned into a nightmare. The Dominican right-hander had a rough outing in his first appearance of the season.

On Sunday morning, the Yankees announced that Gil would make his season debut, but things quickly unraveled. The 27-year-old, returning from a major injury and a long rehab stint, struggled to find the strike zone and was hit hard by the Marlins’ lineup.

New York took an early lead thanks to a solo home run by Trent Grisham. However, Gil faltered soon after, surrendering five hits, five earned runs, and four walks over just 3.1 innings. In the second inning, he was tagged by Troy Johnston and Xavier Edwards with RBI hits, and Kyle Stowers added a sacrifice fly.

In the fourth, Gil issued two more walks, prompting manager Aaron Boone to pull him from the game. Unfortunately for the Yankees, both runners he left on base ended up scoring. Brent Headrick gave up a three-run homer to Kyle Stowers, extending the Marlins’ lead to 6–1.

The Yankees showed some life in the seventh with a two-run homer by Jazz Chisholm Jr., but the momentum was short-lived. In the bottom of the same inning, Jakob Marsee drove a ball deep to center, allowing Trent Grisham to track it down, but not before Miami tacked on their seventh run.

Notably, this marks the first time in franchise history that the Marlins have swept the Yankees. With the momentum from this series, Miami now looks to close the gap on the Philadelphia Phillies and New York Mets in the NL East. The scores from the weekend series were 13–12, 2–0, and 7–3.
