Houston Astros bolster bullpen with veteran closer after Hader’s injury
Astros add veteran reliever with 440 saves as Craig Kimbrel looks for one more shot at postseason glory.

The Houston Astros have confirmed the signing of veteran closer Craig Kimbrel, strengthening their bullpen as they head toward the MLB postseason. The move comes after Josh Hader was sidelined with a shoulder injury, leaving Bryan Abreu to step into the closer role.

Kimbrel brings an imposing résumé. With 440 career saves, he ranks fifth all-time, has been named Reliever of the Year four times, and played a crucial role in the Boston Red Sox’s 2018 World Series championship.
The 37-year-old had been pitching in Triple-A with the Texas Rangers’ affiliate in Round Rock, where he posted a 3.86 ERA, a 1.14 WHIP, 28 strikeouts, 12 walks and five saves across 24 appearances. Released by the Rangers, he became available to explore another shot at a major league roster.
Kimbrel’s 2024 season was turbulent. After failing to secure a spot with the Baltimore Orioles, he signed a minor-league deal with the Atlanta Braves but made just one MLB appearance before being released. He then joined the Rangers’ system, and now finds a new home in Houston as they gear up for October.
