Venezuela’s World Baseball Classic gets underway on Saturday when they host the Dominican Republic. With a formidable roster, the Dominicans will be a tough opponent, but Venezuela will be no pushover. With the booming bats of Jose Altuve, Ronald Acuña, and Gleyber Torres, they are more than up to the challenge. Plus, they have an ace card up their sleeve.

Miguel Cabrera is listed on the Venezuelan roster as a designated hitter. Should he get the nod, this will be the fifth World Baseball Classic that he has appeared in. This would set Miggy apart as the only player to have accomplished the feat.

What is more, not only has Cabrera appeared in all four previous WBCs, he has hit a home run in each. A long ball would set him apart in this area as well.

Several players have appeared in the previous four, but will not appear in this one as a player. In particular, Yadier Molina played for Puerto Rico and is managing the team this go around.

In addition to Miggy, there is a possibility that Mexico will activate left-handed pitcher Oliver Peréz, who has also appeared in the four previous editions of the WBC. Should he throw for Mexico, then he will also have appeared in all five WBCs, but as a pitcher, he has yet to hit a home run.

And with no disrespect to Peréz or Mexico, he is not the talisman that Cabrera is. Miggy can change the outcome of the game in ways that no other player can. And Venezuela as well as the entire baseballing world will be rooting for him to do just that.
