How MLB is planning to honor 25 years since 9/11 with New York’s biggest rivalry
MLB will mark the 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks with a special Subway Series game in New York.

One of the most significant dates in American history is September 11, 2001, when the country suffered terrorist attacks that struck directly at the World Trade Center in New York City. The collapse of the Twin Towers caused the deaths of thousands. Next year will mark 25 years since that day, and Major League Baseball will honor the victims’ memory.
The New York Yankees will host the New York Mets at Yankee Stadium to commemorate the anniversary, an occasion expected to carry deep emotion. It will be only the second time the city’s two teams meet on this date – the first was in 2021 at Citi Field for the 20th anniversary.
With the heart of New York still marked by the attacks nearly 24 years ago, the announcement of this series for 2026 comes at a poignant moment. Both franchises are also fighting to finish the current regular season strongly, aiming to carry momentum as far as possible this year.
2026 awaits Yankees and Mets
The 9/11 matchup will not be the only time the rivals meet in 2026. They will first face off in mid-May at Citi Field in a three-game set, before the anniversary series at Yankee Stadium, which will run from Friday, September 11, through Sunday, September 13.
There is still plenty of baseball left in 2025, but MLB is already writing chapters of the following year. Led by Aaron Judge and Juan Soto, the Yankees and Mets will aim to pay tribute to those lost on that tragic day for the United States. At the same time, they will battle for pride and playoff hopes – because the Subway Series always means more in New York.
