Jeremy Peña is the 2022 MLB World Series MVP

The Houston Astros prevailed over the Philadelphia Phillies in Game 6 to win their second World Series title, and rookie shortstop Jeremy Peña was declared the series’ Most Valuable Player.

It’s been a banner year for Peña, who is only the third rookie to win the honor in World Series history, following Larry Sherry of the Los Angeles Dodgers who received it in 1959, and Livan Hernandez of the Florida Marlins who was honored in 1997. Peña is also the first rookie position player to win the award.

Peña reaps the gold

Before the championship series, the 25-year-old had already received this year’s award for American League Championship Series MVP for his 6-for-17, two home run, two-double record against the New York Yankees.

He was also the first Astros rookie to win the Gold Glove award, which he received for being the best defensive player at his position in the American League.

Peña was 10 for 25 with a home run in the World Series, went 2 for 4 in the Game 6 victory, and had a hit in all six games. He also delivered a standout performance defensively at shortstop.

Peña thanks family and teammates

The outstanding rookie credits his family and his teammates for the confidence and composure he exhibited in the face of the pressures of playing at the game’s highest level in his first year.

“It has a lot to do with my family, my upbringing,” said the son of former Major League second baseman Geronimo Peña.

“Shout out to my teammates as well. They took me in since day one. They gave me the confidence to just go out and play my game.”
