Jordan Montgomery eyed by New York’s Yankees and Mets
The New York Yankees are clear that they must strengthen the roster to be competitive again in the 2024 MLB season
From the moment they wrapped up their activities in the previous campaign, speculation about potential additions to the New York Yankees roster began, including players such as Juan Soto and Yoshinobu Yamamoto. Now, it appears that interest is also directed towards the experienced pitcher, Jordan Montgomery, who recently clinched the World Series championship with the Texas Rangers.
Is Montgomery New York bound?
Montgomery played a pivotal role in securing the title for the Texas team, boasting an impressive 2.79 ERA, a 1.09 WHIP, and 58 strikeouts in 11 appearances. During the regular season, he maintained a 3.20 ERA with 166 strikeouts in 188 innings, making 32 starts split between the St. Louis Cardinals and the Rangers.
The left-handed pitcher is seeking a bumper contract for three or four seasons that would provide the desired continuity. It has been rumoured, though, that both New York teams, the Yankees and the Mets, are vying for his services.
In the case of the Yankees, they are exploring the possibility of his return, viewing it as feasible if they are unable to secure the commitment of the Japanese pitcher Yamamoto. The Yankees are in urgent need of a starting pitcher to add versatility to their rotation.
The Mets are in a similar situation, having experienced the departure of Justin Verlander and Max Scherzer towards the end of the season.
