Mets designate Robinson Canó for assignment, parting ways
Mets’ Robinson Canó was designated for assignment after MLB cut roster to 26 players.
On Monday, baseman Robinson Canó parted ways with the New York Mets.
The team announced the decision given MLB’s deadline to cut rosters from 28 to 26 players. Pitcher Yoan Lopez was also optioned to Triple-A.
The Mets acquired the former All-Star in 2018 after he was suspended for the first time for performance-enhancing drugs. The veteran second baseman then entirely missed the 2021 season following a second doping suspension.
The 39-year-old played sparingly during his time in New York, appearing in 12 games with eight hits, one home run, and 11 strikeouts. Canó hit .195/.233/.268 with one home run in those games.
Canó's rustiness ends his time with the Mets
Since New York has the best record in the MLB, winning all seven series they’ve played from opening day, the Mets don’t need to wait on Canó to improve his timing or to move on from another doping problem.
