It was a dream night for Mexico on Sunday. In addition to Guillermo del Toro’s Oscars win, the Mexican baseball team earned a stunning victory over the United States, the inventors of the sport and a team full of MLB stars.

Benji Gil’s men won 11-5 in Pool C of the World Baseball Classic, a result that goes straight into the history books of Mexican sport.

On the back of Team Mexico’s triumph in Phoenix, we take a look back at other memorable victories that the country has pulled off against its North American neighbours.

Mexico have form for beating US in WBC

It is not the first time that Mexico have seen off the US in baseball. In March 2006, also at the World Baseball Classic, ‘la Novena Mexicana’ surprised the world by winning 2-1 against a team that boasted future MLB Hall of Famers.

And history repeated itself seven years later in the 2013 World Baseball Classic, when the Mexicans defeated Team USA 5-2.

States slain as Mexico lift college football world titles

More recently, in the 2018 World University American Football Championship, a Mexican team featuring 24 players from Borregos Salvajes Monterrey defeated the US 20-17 in the championship game. This was despite the States boasting a roster that included 25 players from NCAA Division 1, including four NFL prospects.

The win earned Mexico their third straight global title - and was their second consecutive triumph over the US in the tournament decider. Two years earlier, they had beaten States 35-7 to lift the trophy.
