MLB controversy: Broadcaster under fire for anti-Latino comments at Padres game
John Browner faces backlash after criticizing a mariachi performance at Petco Park during a Padres game.
A tense moment unfolded at Petco Park after sports media personality John Browner sparked controversy with comments widely condemned as offensive.
During a San Diego Padres game against the Colorado Rockies, Browner, a co-host of the local show Kaplan and Crew, criticized the presence of a mariachi band performing in the stadium, which is a part of the team’s effort to celebrate the region’s deep cultural ties to Mexico.
He described the scene as “anti-American” and went as far as joking about calling the “Orange Captain,” a reference to president Donald Trump, adding that these types of cultural events were “getting out of control.”
Social media reaction and fallout from Browner’s comments
The Padres have leaned heavily into their connection with San Diego’s binational identity in recent years, frequently incorporating Mexican cultural elements into game-day experiences. Mariachi performances, themed jerseys, and community outreach initiatives have become part of that effort to reflect the fan base.
On this occasion, the performance coincided with a high-attendance game and promotional events tied to the franchise’s cultural branding, making the backlash even more visible.
Clips of Browner’s comments spread rapidly across social media, even after the original video was taken down. Users who had saved the footage reposted it, fueling criticism.
Many fans and commentators described the remarks as xenophobic or dismissive of Latino culture, particularly in a city like San Diego, where that culture is central to the community.
Browner’s response: “It was satire”
Hours after the controversy erupted, Browner and the Kaplan and Crew program issued statements defending the segment. According to the show, the comments were intended as satire.
“This is completely out of context. It was a joke from our show,” the statement said. “It’s satire that, for someone unfamiliar with it, could come across as offensive… it wasn’t real. It was a joke.”
The explanation has done little to fully calm the reaction, with critics arguing that intent does not erase the impact of the remarks.
MLB has leaned into cultural initiatives in recent years, from themed nights to international outreach. And for many fans, these moments reflect the evolving identity of the game.
