In the 2024 World Series, the Los Angeles Dodgers emerged victorious over the New York Yankees to lift the famous trophy.
The Los Angeles Dodgers faced long-time rivals the New York Yankees for the famous Commissioner’s Trophy in the 2024 World Series. After running up a 3-0 lead, the Dodgers finally clinched the title in five, the decisive game a tight 7-6 win.
How many times have Dodgers, Yankees met in World Series?
This was the 12th time in MLB history that the Dodgers had faced the Yankees in the World Series - and the first since 1981. On that occasion, Los Angeles won the series in six games, coming back from 2-0 down to lift their first championship since 1965. It was the Dodgers’ third World Series win over the Yankees; the franchise also enjoyed championship-round triumphs over the men from the Big Apple in 1955 (as the Brooklyn Dodgers) and 1963. The Yankees defeated the Dodgers in the World Series in 1941, 1947, 1949, 1952, 1953, 1956, 1977 and 1978.
How big is the Commissioner’s Trophy and how much is it worth?
The Commissioner’s Trophy was first presented to the MLB champions in the 1967 season, when the St Louis Cardinals beat the Boston Red Sox in seven games. One thing that sets the Commissioner’s Trophy apart from the silverware handed out in other major US sports leagues is that a new version is crafted for each year’s winner of the World Series.
Made chiefly from sterling silver, the Commissioner’s Trophy weighs about 30 lbs, is just under 24 inches tall and has a diameter of 11 inches. A notable feature of the trophy is that it has 30 gold-plated flags, each representing one of the franchises in the North American baseball league. The flags sit on top of a silver baseball bearing latitudinal and longitudinal lines, symbolising the world. The trophy also carries the signature of the MLB commissioner, who is currently Rob Manfred.
Since 1999, the renowned jewelers Tiffany & Co have been responsible for making the Commissioner’s Trophy, which is valued at a reported $15,000. On completion of the World Series, the trophy ceremony takes place in the center of the baseball diamond, regardless of whether the winners are the home or away team in the decisive game. Previously, this ceremony only took place if the home team had just been crowned World Series champions.
How many times have Dodgers and Yankees won the Commissioner’s Trophy?
MLB’s most decorated franchise, the Yankees boast a record 27 World Series titles, of which seven have been won since the introduction of the Commissioner’s Trophy. New York’s most recent World Series triumph came in 2009, when the Yankees overcame the Philadelphia Phillies 4-2.
Meanwhile, the Dodgers have now been MLB champions on eight occasions, the previous one just four years ago in 2020 (4-3 against the Atlanta Braves). Four of the franchise’s World Series victories have taken place during the Commissioner’s Trophy era.
