National anthem singer draws fans’ attention for all of the wrong reasons at Women’s Pro League Baseball opener

The 85-year-old singer caught fans by surprise at the Los Angeles Queens - New York Heights inaugural matchup. The game was already in trouble due to rain delay at Robin Roberts Stadium in Springfield, Illinois.

Fans were divided on Twitter about Martha Reeve’s rendition of the national anthem:

• “I just told my wife I was going to set this as her new alarm and she immediately typed up her own divorce papers,” Joe Massocco commented.
• “I think everyone owes Roseanne an apology after seeing this,” THK1138 posted on their X account.
• “Omg that’s the worst I’ve ever heard…could only listen for about 10 seconds,” Vaxtard added.

But others tried to “defend” the singer:

• “I stopped laughing when I realized it was Martha Reeves. She once had an amazing voice. And I give her credit for trying her best to sing a national anthem,” James P. Earling said in her defense.
• “Kinda growing on me with more listens,” gs723 posted.
• “Watch this at 2x lmao, you won’t regret it,” kc masterpiece added.

The national anthem performance by Martha Reeves has fans divided, but it did achieve one thing for the newly created baseball league: it got a lot of attention, albeit for the wrong reason.

BTW, the Los Angeles Queens beat the New York Heights 10-8.
