New setback for Max Muncy, who heads back to Dodgers’ injured list
The first option to fill the hot corner role after Max Muncy's injury is Alex Freeland, but the Dodgers have multiple alternatives.
The Los Angeles Dodgers (68–53) are experiencing one of the worst collapses for a team valued at over $400 million — and things may get even tougher with Max Muncy sidelined. The veteran infielder has been placed on the injured list due to a strain in his right oblique muscle.
Dodgers manager Dave Roberts confirmed that Max Muncy is dealing with a Grade 1 strain in his right oblique, which will land him on the 10-day IL. Muncy began feeling discomfort after Wednesday’s batting practice and was held out of the final game of the series against the Angels.
“It’s definitely a tough loss. I think the guys just need to keep performing at the top of their abilities,” manager Dave Roberts told The Athletic. “It’s hard to replace Max — what he brings in terms of plate discipline, power, getting on base — all of it.”
Roberts added that he doesn’t expect the injury to be season-ending for the 34-year-old slugger. Born in Midland, Texas, Muncy has appeared in 89 games for the Dodgers in 2025, posting a .258 batting average with 72 hits in 279 at-bats. He’s also tallied 17 home runs and 64 RBIs.
Who will take Max Muncy’s place at third base?
This marks Muncy’s second stint on the sidelines in 2025. He previously missed all of July and the first week of August due to knee discomfort. During that stretch, the Dodgers rotated Miguel Rojas, Tommy Edman, Kiké Hernández, and Alex Freeland at third base.
With Muncy out again, the leading candidate to take over the hot corner is Alex Freeland. However, the Dodgers have several options on the roster. Other potential replacements include Miguel Rojas and Buddy Kennedy, who was recently claimed off waivers from the Toronto Blue Jays.
