The New York Yankees received an unexpected boost with the return of one of their relievers, sidelined since late June with a strained left oblique.

Puerto Rican pitcher Fernando Cruz, acquired from the Cincinnati Reds in last offseason’s trade for catcher José Treviño, now gives the Bronx Bombers a valuable reinforcement as they push through the final stretch of the season.

Chasing a postseason berth, the Yankees are locked in a fierce divisional battle with the Toronto Blue Jays and Boston Red Sox.

Before landing on the injured list, the 35-year-old Cruz posted a 3.00 ERA with 54 strikeouts across 33 innings.
