Ohtani and Judge end 12-year wait with MLB MVP awards
Shohei Ohtani and Aaron Judge capped off their breakout seasons after being named the National and American League MVPs.
There were no surprises. Shohei Ohtani of the Los Angeles Dodgers and Aaron Judge of the New York Yankees were named the Most Valuable Players of the MLB season after both led their teams to the World Series, where the Dodgers secured the title in five games.
MVPs both from World Series
This marks the first time since 2012 that the MVPs of the American League and National League reached the World Series in the same season. That year, Buster Posey of the San Francisco Giants and Miguel Cabrera of the Detroit Tigers received the honors.
Ohtani edged out Francisco Lindor and Ketel Marte, the other nominees, to claim the award. He repeated his feat from last year, when he won the MVP award in the American League as a member of the Los Angeles Angels. The Japanese superstar was a unanimous choice, securing all 420 votes. Francisco Lindor finished second with 263 votes, while Ketel Marte came in third with 229 votes. This is Ohtani’s third MVP award, all of which he has won unanimously.
In the American League, Aaron Judge also won unanimously, surpassing his Yankees teammate Juan Soto and Bobby Witt Jr. of the Kansas City Royals. Judge topped the voting with 420 votes, while Witt Jr. finished second with 270 votes and Soto placed third with 229 votes.
MVP Statistics
Ohtani had a historic season, becoming the first player ever to record more than 50 home runs and 50 stolen bases in a single season. He finished with 54 home runs, 51 stolen bases, 197 hits, 130 RBIs, and 134 runs scored during the regular season.
Judge led the league in home runs with 58 and also posted 144 RBIs, 180 hits, and 122 runs scored over the course of the season.
