Randy Arozarena traded to the Seattle Mariners: contract details
The Cuban-born Mexican will join Dominican Julio Rodríguez to improve Seattle’s outfield.
The trade deadline for the 2024 Major League Baseball season is getting closer and closer, and the first big move involved Mexico’s Randy Arozarena.
Late on Thursday night, the Seattle Mariners announced that they had acquired the services of Randy Arozarena, one of MLB’s top talents.
The rumours surrounding the future of the now ex-Rays player had been swirling for a long time, with of the teams that was linked to the outfielder the Los Angeles Dodgers. “The right-handed slugger joins the squad from the Rays in exchange for minor leaguers RHP Brody Hopkins, OF Aidan Smith and a player to be named later”, the statement read.
What was Randy Arozarena’s record with the Tampa Bay Rays?
During the 2024 season, the 29-year-old Cuban-born Mexican registered a .211 batting average. Arozarena connected 74 hits in 350 at bats. The left fielder accumulated 37 runs produced and 15 homers.
The Mariners are making this move with the intention of snatching the top spot in the AL West from the Houston Astros. The Texan ninth has a 53-49 record while Seattle is 53-51, one game out of the divisional lead.
What are Randy Arozarena’s contract details?
Julio Rodriguez is currently on the 10-day injured list with ankle discomfort, but as soon as he recovers, Seattle’s outfield will be patrolled by him, Arozarena and Luke Raley. The Cuban-born Mexican will take Raley’s place in left field and Mitch Haniger will become a backup, but could serve as DH when Mitch Garver moves to catcher in place of Cal Raleigh.
As for Arozarena’s contract details, the MLB star signed a 1-year-long, $8,100,000 contract with the Tampa Bay Rays. The deal was hugely lucrative for him, and he earned a base salary of $2,830,620, according to athlete salary website Spotrac.
“Randy is a dynamic, high-energy all-around player who has excelled in the biggest moments on the biggest stages,” Hollander told the Mariners’ official website. “He’s going to be a great addition to our clubhouse and lineup.”
With this signing, added the club, “The Mariners Major League, 40-man roster is now full at 40 players.”
