Shohei Ohtani makes big ‘new first’ announcement
The Japanese player for the Los Angeles Dodgers made the announcement through a post on his Instagram account.
Shohei Ohtani, the undisputed star of Major League Baseball and fresh off winning his first World Series, is ready to take a monumental step in his personal life. The Japanese player for the Los Angeles Dodgers announced that he and his wife, Mamiko Tanaka, are expecting their first child.
Ohtani building a life in Los Angeles
Ohtani shared the news via an Instagram post, featuring his dog Decoy alongside baby shoes, an ultrasound photo, and a onesie. “Can’t wait for the little rookie to join our family soon,” wrote the MLB superstar.
After signing his historic 10-year, $700 million contract with the Dodgers, it was clear that Ohtani’s future was set in Los Angeles. Now, with a baby on the way, his life in La La Land seems even more rooted.
Who is Shohei Ohtani’s wife?
Mamiko Tanaka, also known as “Mana,” was born on December 11, 1996, and is 27 years old, two years younger than Ohtani. Standing at 1.80 meters (5′11″), Tanaka is a former professional basketball player. She played for Waseda University and later for the Fujitsu Red Wave in Japan’s Women’s Basketball League.
Tanaka retired in 2023 after a four-year professional career. During her final season, she posted a 47.7% field goal percentage and a 69.9% free-throw percentage across 28 games, according to ESPN.
At a press conference following their marriage announcement, Ohtani described Tanaka as a “normal Japanese woman”, highlighting her grounded personality despite her impressive athletic background.
Ohtani’s growing family marks a new chapter in his life as he continues to excel both on and off the field.
