The New York Yankees are going through a rough patch in the season and have lost ground in the American League East – they now sit in third place, behind the Toronto Blue Jays and Boston Red Sox.

Who is Kenta Maeda and why did the Yankees sign him?

Amid their slump, the Bronx Bombers were one of the most active teams ahead of the trade deadline, and on Monday they added another right-handed pitcher on a minor league deal: Kenta Maeda. The Yankees have assigned him to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

Maeda holds a 68–56 record with six saves and a 4.20 ERA across 226 career games. He’s made 172 starts over nine MLB seasons, pitching for the Dodgers from 2016 to 2019, the Twins in 2020, 2021 and 2023, and the Tigers in 2024 and 2025.

The Osaka-born pitcher was acquired by the Dodgers through the posting system from Japan’s Hiroshima Carp and signed an eight-year deal on January 7, 2016.
