The New York Yankees continue to make changes to their roster in the face of free agency in the MLB. After falling in the World Series to the Los Angeles Dodgers in five games (1-4), the Manhattan Mules have bid farewell to a number of players who were at the end their contracts.

The players who have become free agents are: Juan Soto, Gleyber Torres, Alex Verdugo, relief pitchers Tommy Kahnle, Clay Holmes, Jonathan Loáisiga and Tim Hill.

Starting pitcher Gerrit Cole, was in doubt after opting out of his contract, but it has been reported that he will continue with the Yankees.

On the other hand, the Bronx Bombers had a $17 million team option on first baseman Anthony Rizzo, but opted to buy out the contract for $6 million and he became a free agent.

The latest loss for the New York Yankees

The Yankees declined their $5 million option to bring back relief pitcher Lou Trivino in 2025. Trivino flashed down the stretch in 2022, earning a contract extension in January 2024, but missed two seasons of action due to Tommy John surgery.

Trivino came to the team from the Oakland Athletics, in a trade with Dominican pitcher Frankie Montas for four players. During his time in New York, in 21.2 innings, he left a record of 1-2 with a 1.66 ERA plus one save in 25 appearances.

He was non-tendered by the team during the 2023-24 offseason, and later signed a one-year extension with a $5 million club option for 2025. However he didn’t pitch for the Yankees during 2024, as he remained with the minors.
