The non-American surprisingly vying for MVP at the 2025 MLB World Series
Born in Tijuana, embraced by two nations, the Blue Jays star has rewritten baseball records – and may yet add one more to his name.
Born in Tijuana but celebrated by fans across both Mexico and Canada, Alejandro Kirk has etched his name in gold in baseball’s history books. His simple yet commanding presence in this World Series has already made history in more ways than one – and at this point, dreaming big seems anything but far-fetched.
After helping the Toronto Blue Jays clinch their ticket against the Seattle Mariners, the border-town catcher became the first ever from Mexico to reach the Fall Classic. But that was just the beginning. With his home run in Game 1, he became the first Mexican-born player to hit one in a World Series. Then, in Game 3, he did it again – the first from his country to homer twice in the same edition of the championship.
Could Kirk really win MVP?
With those achievements already secured, imagining him as the first Mexican player to win the Willie Mays World Series MVP Award no longer seems like a fantasy. The question now is: does he have a real shot? The answer is an emphatic yes. The numbers, at least through Game 3, speak clearly – and they’re on his side.
George Springer
Game 1: 2 hits
Game 2: 1 hit
Game 3: none
Total – 3 hits, no walks, no RBIs in 11 at-bats
Vladimir Guerrero Jr.
Game 1: 2 hits, 1 walk
Game 2: 1 hit
Game 3: 1 hit, 1 walk
Total – 4 hits, 2 walks, no RBIs in 14 at-bats
Daulton Varsho
Game 1: 1 hit, 2 RBIs
Game 2: none
Game 3: 2 hits, 1 RBI
Total – 3 hits, no walks, 3 RBIs in 12 at-bats
Alejandro Kirk
Game 1: 3 hits, 1 walk, 2 RBIs
Game 2: 1 RBI
Game 3: 2 hits, 2 walks, 3 RBIs
Total – 5 hits, 3 walks and 5 RBIs in 11 at-bats
Laid out like that, the outlook couldn’t be brighter. Still, there’s one crucial piece missing – winning the World Series itself. Traditionally, the Most Valuable Player award goes to someone from the champion team, meaning Toronto would need to triumph for Kirk to be immortalized holding the trophy and the individual honor side by side.
Nothing’s impossible.
